A Guide to Become a Professional Driver in Germany

Required Driver’s Licenses

You must possess one of the following driver’s licenses: C, CE, C1, C1E, D, DE, D1, or D1E and any of the following vocational qualifications: SRC 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5.

Legal Provisions and Regulations Applicable to Professional Drivers

German Residence Act: Sections 81a and 19c Paragraph 1 Employment Regulation: Section 24A Driver’s

License Conversion For the use of heavy goods vehicles, the driver’s license must be converted after entering Germany, and Code 95 must be obtained. If your driver’s license is not converted within 6 months, you can request an additional period of 15 months.

Language Requirement

There is no language requirement for professional drivers. Basic German language skills may be necessary for professional drivers who wish to transport passengers. For spouses wishing to join, a German A1 language certificate is required.

Salary Requirements and Additional Demands

Over 45 Years Old:

  • The annual gross salary of professional drivers over 45 years of age in Germany must be €53,130. This translates to a monthly gross salary of €4,427.50.
  • If your salary in Germany is low, it must be supplemented with your retirement income, rental income, etc., from Turkey to reach a monthly gross income of €4,427.50.

Under 45 Years Old:

  • Base Salary: €2,397.00
  • Average Salary: €2,797.00
  • Maximum Salary: €3,319.00

These salaries are the German average; they may vary depending on the federal state, language proficiency, professional experience, and route length. For those wishing to come with their families, the salary must be sufficient to support the family. For example, in Duisburg, NRW, the average gross salary for a family of four is €2,900.00, which means a net salary of €2,000.00. In this case, the family of four will have €1,200.00 net income remaining after deducting living expenses (excluding rent). This implies that they should rent a place for a maximum of €800.00 per month. If you wish to come with your family, a valid lease agreement is also required in some federal states.
