How to Bring Your Adult Child (Over 18) to Germany

For parents residing in Germany, the process of bringing their adult children (over 18 years old) differs from that of minor children. While family reunification typically applies to children under 18, there are two main pathways for adult children to come to Germany: a work visa or a student visa.

Entry with a Work Visa

One of the most common options for adult children is entering Germany with a work visa. To obtain a work visa, certain conditions must be met. If your child possesses any of the following documents or qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree,

  • Vocational school diploma,

  • Driver’s license of classes C1, C, D1, D, C1E, CE, D1E, DE, or E,

and can secure a qualified job contract in a relevant field, entry to Germany is possible. The job contract must align with your child’s education and meet the salary requirements set by the German Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit). If these conditions are satisfied, your child can immigrate to Germany as a skilled worker under the Skilled Immigration Act.

Entry with a Student Visa

If your child does not meet the requirements for a work visa or wishes to continue their education, they can come to Germany with a student visa. With a student visa, your child can:

  • Attend a language course,

  • Enroll in vocational training,

  • Or pursue a bachelor’s/master’s degree.

An important consideration for university applicants is that most degree programs are taught in German, often requiring B2 or C1 level proficiency. Even for language courses or conditional admissions, the consulate may reject visa applications if there is no proof of at least A1-A2 German proficiency. For vocational training, B1 German is recommended.

Another requirement for studying in Germany is a blocked account (Sperrkonto) or a sponsorship letter (Verpflichtungserklärung). For this visa, either €11,904 must be deposited in a blocked account, or you as a parent can provide a financial guarantee if you have sufficient income.

After completing their studies or training, graduates can obtain a work permit if they find a qualified job. Individuals who have studied or trained in Germany benefit from simplified procedures for obtaining a permanent residence permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis) and later citizenship.
